Picture a multi-ton granite boulder so precisely balanced that a strong gust of wind alone used to rock it — that's Viklan, the logan stone nicknamed Dominic, tucked away in a quiet corner of Czechia near Karlovy Vary. It's a small but fascinating natural monument that draws in geology lovers and legend seekers alike.

The boulder, made of porphyritic biotite granite, measures roughly 3.5 m long, 1.5 m wide and 2 m tall. At its top sits a round hollow, most likely a natural rock basin, though folklore has long linked it to ancient pagan sacrificial rituals. The surroundings are gentle short-grass pastures dotted with wildflowers, giving the walk here a peaceful, pastoral feel — especially lovely in spring and summer when harebell and common toadflax bloom.

How to get there

• From Rybničná (part of Bochov) — short detour off the blue-marked trail, easy walk
• From Javorná — head north along gentle terrain, easy difficulty

Practical information

• Protected as a natural monument since 1979 — damaging or defacing the rock is prohibited
• The protected area covers just 0.02 ha

Carved into the side of the boulder is the inscription Dominic along with the dates 1776 and 1796, still a curiosity for visitors today. Despite repeated attempts over the years to topple it, Viklan has never budged from its spot.
