trails, peaks and attractions
The Gorce Mountains are one of the most intimate and unspoiled ranges in the Western Beskids — gently rolling, deeply forested, and dotted with wide alpine meadows that feel like nature's own clearings. If you are looking for hiking that feels authentic without the crowds of the Tatras, this is your place.
The landscape here is softer than the rocky Tatras, but far from tame. Deep V-shaped valleys carved by rushing streams cut between ridges cloaked in beech and spruce, and from the summits you get sweeping views of the Tatras, the Pieniny gorge, and the Beskid Sądecki range. The beating heart of the Gorce is Turbacz — a rare mountain hub from which six separate ridges fan out in all directions. In spring the meadows erupt in wildflowers, summer brings lush greenery, and autumn turns the beech forests into a blaze of gold and copper.
Top Peaks and Highlights:The name 'Gorce' likely comes from the old Polish word meaning 'to burn' — early settlers cleared these forests by controlled burning to create the pastoral meadows that still define the character of these mountains today.
