Sedlo Ploskej (1,396 m) is a wide, grassy saddle tucked into the heart of the Veľká Fatra mountains in western Slovakia — a natural crossroads where hiking trails meet and sweeping pastoral meadows stretch out in every direction. Whether you are passing through on a long ridge walk or making it a destination in itself, this welcoming pass has a charm all of its own.

The saddle sits between the summit of Ploská (1,532 m) to the west and Čierny kameň (1,479 m) to the east. The entire area is covered with open grassy terrain — centuries-old highland pastures shaped by generations of shepherds. The views are broad and unobstructed, and the atmosphere is peaceful and airy. That said, in foggy conditions the sheer size of the saddle can make navigation tricky, so a map or GPS is a good idea when visibility is low. In summer the meadows are alive with wildflowers, while autumn brings golden hues and winter transforms the landscape into a snowy highland plateau.

• A solid wooden shelter with a table and benches stands just below the eastern slopes — perfect for a rest stop.
• An educational trail board for the Naučný chodník Čierny kameň route is located nearby.
• In fog, the broad open saddle can be disorienting — carry a map or use GPS navigation.

Interestingly, although the saddle technically connects the Ľubochnianska valley to the north-east and the Pilná valley to the south-east, it was never traditionally used as a passage by shepherds or travellers — it has always been a place to linger, not just to cross.
