Ostredok (1,595 m a.s.l.) is the highest peak in the Veľká Fatra range — a mountain massif that tends to fly under the radar compared to Slovakia's more famous ranges, yet rewards those who make the effort with one of the most breathtaking 360-degree panoramas in the country. Open, grassy summits and no obstructing forest mean the views are yours from the very moment you arrive on top.

The peak actually has two summits: the main southern one at 1,595.6 m and a slightly lower northern top at 1,592 m. Both are open and treeless, sitting along the main ridge of the range. On a clear day the panorama stretches across the Malá Fatra, the High and Low Tatras, the Beskydy, and — on exceptionally clear days — peaks in four neighbouring countries: Kékes in Hungary, Schneeberg in Austria, Lysá hora in the Czech Republic, and Babia Góra in Poland. In winter the steep slopes carry a genuine avalanche risk, so summer and autumn are the ideal seasons to visit. The famous 49-kilometre Veľkofatranská Magistrála long-distance trail, marked in red, passes directly over the summit.

• From Staré Hory via Krížna — blue trail, approx. 4:05 h up / 3:15 h down — moderate

• The peak lies within Veľká Fatra National Park — standard national park regulations apply.
• The red-marked Veľkofatranská Magistrála long-distance trail crosses the summit, making it easy to combine with neighbouring peaks such as Ploská or Krížna.
• Avalanche risk on steep slopes in winter — exercise caution outside of the main hiking season.
• Ostredok ranks 14th in Slovakia by topographic prominence, with a prominence of 672 m.

Here is a fun fact: until 2015, the slightly lower northern summit was officially considered the highest point of Veľká Fatra — it took a dedicated survey by the Bratislava Geodetic and Cartographic Institute to confirm that the true top lies some 400 m to the south.
