Račkova Valley is one of the most rewarding valleys in the Western Tatras, tucked away on the Liptov side of the range. Stretching over 5 kilometres from a spruce-covered lower section all the way up to alpine lakes and a mountain pass, it offers a full mountain experience without overwhelming crowds.

The lower part of the valley runs from 960 to 1,440 m above sea level, winding through dense spruce forest past the meadows of Nižná lúka and Prostredná poľana, where the trees part just enough to reveal the surrounding ridges. Higher up — in the section locals call 'Račkov zadok' — the terrain steepens and the forest gives way to dwarf pine and open grassland. At the head of the valley, cradled in a glacial cirque just below the pass, lie the Račkove plesá — small mountain tarns at 1,697 m, their number varying with seasonal water levels. The stream Račková runs the length of the valley and spills into a small waterfall at 1,570 m. In summer the valley is lush and quiet; in autumn it glows with golden hues — a genuinely beautiful spot in any season.

Yellow trail no. 8621 runs the full length of the valley from Nižná lúka to Račkovo sedlo. At the junction below Klin, a green trail branches off into the side valley of Gáborova dolina. From the pass you can continue to either Hrubý vrch or Klin.

• Since 2017, a free open-air installation of wooden sculptures called 'Drevuliaci' by artist Michal Hanula is displayed along the valley paths — a fun surprise for families and curious hikers alike.

Worth knowing: Račkova Valley and its neighbour Jamnícka dolina both begin at exactly the same spot at 960 m, separated only by the Otrhance ridge — a rare twin-valley arrangement that makes the start of the hike particularly interesting.
