Drei Schwestern, or The Three Sisters, is a striking three-peaked mountain chain straddling the border between Austria and Liechtenstein. It offers one of the finest panoramic vantage points in the northern Rätikon, with the Rhine Valley on one side and the Saminatal on the other.

The ridge runs north to south, and its three summits - the Great Sister (2053 m), Middle Sister (2048 m) and Little Sister (2034 m) - form a natural border landmark visible from far across the Vorarlberg and Liechtenstein countryside. The terrain is classic alpine limestone ridge walking: rocky crests, steep grassy flanks and sweeping views. In summer the trails are popular with day hikers, while winter conditions demand proper mountaineering experience.

How to reach the summit

• A well-developed network of paths and roads gives easy access to the main peak - the route is considered moderate in difficulty
• The ridge continues south to the border summit Garsellakopf, and further on to Kuhgrat, which lies entirely within Liechtenstein

Practical information

• The main peak can also be reached via rock climbing routes rated UIAA II to V
• The north wall of the Middle Sister offers demanding routes up to UIAA VI - for experienced climbers only
• The Vorarlberg side of the massif has been a protected landscape area since 1976

The first recorded ascent took place on 10 June 1870, made by John Sholto Douglass from Thüringen together with a local hunter named Wieser from Frastanz - though hunters are believed to have reached the summit long before that.
