Vrátna Valley is the beating heart of the Kriváň Malá Fatra mountains — a stunning glacially-carved valley ringed by dramatic peaks and bursting with outdoor activities in every season. Whether you're chasing snowy slopes in winter or mountain ridge trails in summer, this valley delivers an unforgettable Slovak mountain experience.

The valley splits into two arms: Stará dolina (Old Valley) and Nová dolina (New Valley), separated by the Grúň hill (989 m). The entrance alone is spectacular — a narrow gorge called Tiesňavy, carved by the Varínka river with roaring waterfalls and dolomite rock formations nicknamed 'Skalné mesto' (Rock Town), 'Mních' (The Monk) and 'Ťava' (The Camel). In winter, multiple ski areas including Paseky, Poludňový grúň and Chleb offer snow-guaranteed slopes for downhill skiing, snowboarding, ski touring, snowtubing and even paragliding. Summer brings a rich network of marked hiking trails of all difficulty levels, with chairlifts to Snilovské sedlo and Grúň making ridge hikes accessible to everyone. The historic shepherd's hamlet of Štefanová serves as the main tourist hub in the valley.

A remarkable piece of history: the entire valley was once a private hunting ground of the aristocratic Majláth family, and skiing here only began in the 1920s — making Vrátna one of the earliest ski destinations in the Western Carpathians.
