Jánošíkove Diery is one of the most thrilling gorge systems in the Slovak Carpathians — a wild labyrinth of canyons, waterfalls, ladders and chain-assisted paths carved into the heart of the Malá Fatra mountains. If you want a hike that feels like an adventure rather than a stroll, this is the place.

Tucked inside the Rozsutec National Nature Reserve in the Krivánska Malá Fatra range, the gorges were sculpted by the Hlboký stream over thousands of years. The result is breathtaking: more than twenty waterfalls, towering rock walls, bizarre stone formations and a unique microclimate that shelters rare plant and animal species. The route is divided into three sections — Dolné diery (Lower), Nové diery (New) and Horné diery (Upper). Spring and early summer bring roaring cascades, autumn wraps everything in golden colour, while winter closes the upper section and turns the ladders into icy obstacles best left to experienced mountaineers.

• Biely Potok (northwest) — blue trail via Podžiar junction, moderate difficulty
• Tiesňavy (west) — green trail via Boboty and Vrchpodžiar saddle, moderate difficulty

• The route features footbridges, ladders up to 12–15 m high and iron chains — sturdy footwear is essential
• Horné diery (Upper gorge) is closed during winter
• An educational trail runs through Dolné diery — a good family-friendly starting point
• Suitable for children, but assess the fitness and readiness of your whole group beforehand
• All steel structures on the route were fully replaced in 2009

The gorges take their name from Juraj Jánošík, the legendary Slovak outlaw hero said to have hidden in these inaccessible ravines — a story that gives this already dramatic landscape an extra touch of mystery.
