Ľubochnianska dolina is the longest valley lying entirely within the Veľká Fatra mountain range in Slovakia, stretching roughly 25 km from its quiet upper reaches down to the Váh river valley near the village of Ľubochňa. It separates the range's two main ridges — the eastern 'Liptov' arm and the western 'Turiec' arm — and rewards visitors with a genuine sense of wild, unhurried mountain scenery.
The valley cuts through several distinct geological formations, creating a rich variety of landscapes and vegetation along the way. The stream Ľubochnianka accompanies you throughout, and the middle and upper sections fall within the Low Tatras National Park. In autumn the forested slopes blaze with colour, summer brings cool shade beneath the canopy, and in winter a deep silence settles over the snow-covered valley floor.
How to get thereUntil 1965 an electric narrow-gauge forest railway ran the length of the valley, powered by a hydroelectric plant on the Ľubochnianka stream. The power station still operates today — a living reminder of the valley's industrial past.
