Černý důl is a small but ecologically remarkable wetland meadow tucked within the Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj protected landscape area. This modest natural monument packs in a surprising diversity of protected plants and small creatures.

The surrounding landscape is defined by sandstone rock formations and forest, cradling a damp, sedge-covered meadow that lies right below Zámecký vrch (425 m above sea level). In spring and early summer the meadow bursts into bloom with wild orchids and other rare wetland species, while the moist soil supports lush, specialized vegetation. Water from the valley drains north toward the Pšovka stream, and on misty mornings the whole place takes on a quiet, almost enchanted atmosphere.

How to get there

• Tubož — cycle route 003, through Soví důl valley into Černý důl, approx. 1 km, easy
• Houska Castle — cycle route 003 passes nearby; the blue-marked hiking trail through Houska does not run directly through Černý důl

Practical information

• Protected as a natural monument since 2000, covering just 1.71 ha
• Home to protected species such as the western marsh orchid, adder's-tongue fern, bogbean and narrow-leaved cottongrass
• Wildlife includes the raft spider (Dolomedes fimbriatus), fire salamander and common frog
• Visitors are encouraged to stick to marked paths to protect the fragile wetland habitat

Despite its tiny size, this hidden pocket of wetland biodiversity has long attracted botanists and nature photographers drawn to its rare orchids and amphibians.
