Vrátenská hora (507 m a.s.l.) is the highest point of the Mělník district, rising quietly in the eastern part of the Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area. Its steel lookout tower rewards visitors with one of the widest panoramas in the region — a perfect half-day trip destination.

The hill has a gentle, neovolcanic character, wrapped in forest that opens up dramatic views toward the twin peaks of Bezděz and Malý Bezděz, the mysterious Houska Castle, and on clear days even Prague itself. In spring and summer the woodland trails feel calm and shaded, autumn brings vivid colors across the Kokořínsko hills, and in winter the observation platform offers crisp views over the snow-dusted České středohoří ridges. It's a peaceful spot, popular mainly with those chasing a rewarding view rather than crowds.

How to reach the summit

• Parking at a former quarry on the southwestern slope — short walk on foot to the tower and summit, easy difficulty
• Blue-marked trail Nosálov – Houska passes directly by the tower
• Yellow-marked trail offers a short connection across the northern slope

Fun fact — the first structure on the hill was a wooden fire-hose drying tower, moved here from Mšeno in 1893 and later destroyed by a storm. The current steel tower, opened in 1999, doubles as a mobile network transmitter.
