Velký beškovský vrch is a modest but fascinating hill hidden in the Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area, where sandstone rock formations meet the remnants of ancient volcanic activity. It's the kind of place that rewards curious hikers with dramatic rock canyons and quiet forest trails rather than crowds and souvenir shops.

The hill forms a distinctive short east-west ridge, built mainly of Cretaceous quartz sandstone, though basalt (nephelinite) rock emerges near the summit itself. Steep slopes are cut by rocky steps and radial ravines shaped by weathering and erosion — a favourite spot among rock climbers. The forest changes character depending on the bedrock: beech woods with some spruce grow on the volcanic rock, while pine and spruce dominate the sandstone areas. Meadows open up on the southwestern slopes. Views from the terraces are at their best in spring and autumn when the foliage is thinner, while winter brings a hushed, almost secretive atmosphere to the woods.

How to reach the summit

• From Dubé — blue-marked trail, moderate difficulty, with a signposted side path leading to the summit itself
• Green trail Dražejov – Rozcestí U Kamenného vrchu crosses the southern and western slopes

Practical information

• Nearby lies the Kamenný vrch u Křenova nature monument and the Beškovský les nature trail
• Terraces offer views of Kokořín Castle to the south and the nearby Vysoký vrch to the north
• The blue trail continues onward to Houska Castle

About 500 metres north stands its smaller neighbour, Malý beškovský vrch (395 m), making this a great area for a longer loop hike combining both summits.
