Berkovský vrch is a modest but strikingly scenic peak in northern Bohemia, crowned by the dramatic ruins of Starý Berštejn Castle. Visible from a great distance, it draws hikers not just for its height but for the sweeping views awaiting at the top.

This volcanic hill rises above the village of Vrchovany within the Ralská pahorkatina highlands. The approach winds through a peaceful, pastoral landscape of orchards and gentle slopes. At the summit, amid the old castle walls, a circular panorama opens up over the Ralská pahorkatina, Lake Máchovo jezero, the Kokořínsko region, the České středohoří highlands and the Lužické hory mountains. In clear autumn or spring air the views stretch impressively far, while summer brings a steady trickle of visitors exploring the ruins.

How to reach the summit

• Vrchovany (parking at the foot of the hill) — yellow trail, short climb, easy difficulty
• The yellow-marked trail connecting Dubá and Staré Splavy runs directly over the summit

Practical information

• Access to the castle ruins is only possible by prior arrangement with the leaseholder
• By car you can only reach the base of the hill in Vrchovany
