Portlahorn (2010 m) is a striking, massive peak with three ridges in the Damüls mountain group of the Bregenzerwald range. What sets it apart is its remarkably lush vegetation - dense thickets of blueberries, alpine roses, juniper and green alder cover its slopes, especially in the avalanche gullies.

The surrounding landscape is classic alpine scenery, rich with wildflowers and open meadows, offering views toward neighboring summits such as Portlakopf, Hübsche Bühel, Sünser Spitze and Ragazer Blanken. In summer the mountain is a peaceful, green destination for hikers, while in winter it becomes a popular target for snowshoe and ski touring, including night tours. The picturesque Blaue See lake lies only about 280 meters from the summit.

How to reach the summit

• Portlaalpe (1710 m, summer-only hut) - shortest route via Portlafürkle, about 1 hour, 300 m ascent, easy
• Damüls via Sieben Hügel and Sünser Joch, returning via Alpe Oberdamüls (1667 m) - full-day loop, 5-6 hours, about 600 m ascent, moderate

Practical information

• The summit lies within the Hohe Kugel - Hoher Freschen - Mellental protected nature area
• Nearest mountain huts: Portlaalpe and Freschenhaus (1846 m)
• In January 2015 an avalanche on the north slope claimed two lives - winter routes require careful planning

The peak is also known locally as Trangl, a name still used alongside Portlahorn by hikers in the region.
