Smutné sedlo (1,965 m a.s.l.) is one of the most prominent saddles along the main ridge of the Western Tatras. Sitting at a natural crossroads of trails, it serves as the perfect launching point for some of the most rewarding summit hikes in the Roháče area. The wild, rugged atmosphere here is something you won't forget in a hurry.

From the saddle you'll be treated to beautiful views down into Smutná Valley and Žiarska Valley — two stunning glacial valleys stretching out below in opposite directions. Right next to the saddle stands an exposed rocky formation called Smutný zvorník, adding to the dramatic scenery. In winter, avalanche gullies sweep down from here into Smutná Valley and the Veľké Závraty basin, so outside the summer season extra caution is strongly advised. During the summer months the saddle buzzes with hikers heading for peaks like Ostrý Roháč, Plačlivé, Volovec, Tri kopy, Hrubá Kopa and Baníkov.

• The saddle lies on the red trail connecting Pyšné sedlo with the Biela Skala forestry station, and on the blue trail between the mouth of Žiarska Valley and Ťatliakova chata in Roháčska Valley.
• Best time to visit: July to September, when trails are snow-free and fully accessible.

The name 'Smutné' means 'sad' or 'gloomy' in Slovak — a nod to the brooding character of the surrounding valleys, though the panoramas you'll find here are anything but disappointing.
