Tri kopy is one of the most distinctive rock formations in the Western Tatras — three separate rocky summits lined up along the main ridge of the Roháče range, easily spotted from kilometres away. This is no casual stroll, but the sweeping 360-degree panorama and raw mountain scenery make it a truly memorable adventure.
The massif is notably exposed, and crossing it demands both technical skill and physical fitness. The three peaks rise to 2154, 2152 and 2136 metres respectively, each roughly five minutes apart. To the south, the slopes drop into the scenic Žiarska valley in the Liptov region, while the Spálená and Smutná valleys to the north drain toward the Orava river. From the rocky summit you can take in a full circular panorama: the surrounding peaks of the Western Tatras, a slice of the High Tatras, and on clear days the Orava Beskids, Veľká Fatra, Low Tatras and mountain ranges across the nearby Polish border. Summer brings lively trail traffic along the ridge, autumn paints the dwarf pines golden, and winter turns the crossing into a serious mountaineering challenge best left to the experienced.
How to reach the summitThe name 'Tri kopy' simply means 'three mounds' in Slovak — and standing on the ridge, looking at those three proud rocky crowns rising side by side, you will immediately understand why no other name could ever fit.
