Malé sedlo is a quiet mountain pass sitting at around 1,170 metres in the Krivánska Malá Fatra range in Slovakia. Tucked away on a side ridge between two modest summits, it rewards hikers with a genuine sense of wilderness and a peaceful escape from the busier trails of the region.

The pass sits between the peaks of Baraniarky (1,270 m) and Žitné (1,265 m), on a ridge that neatly divides the Veľká Bránica valley to the west from the Vrátna valley and its branches to the east. The terrain here is a pleasing mix of rocky outcrops and dense forest — in summer the canopy keeps things cool and fragrant, while autumn transforms the ridge into a blaze of golden and russet tones. The eastern slopes below the pass fall within the Veľká Bránica nature reserve, whose boundary runs right along the ridge, giving this spot a quietly protected, almost untouched feel.

• Best seasons: spring and autumn, when trails are dry and the landscape is at its most colourful.
• The eastern slopes are a protected nature reserve (Veľká Bránica) — stick to marked trails at all times.

The fact that a hiking trail and a nature reserve boundary share the very same ridge here makes Malé sedlo one of those rare spots where you can feel both the freedom of the mountains and the responsibility of treading lightly — a small but memorable detail that stays with you long after the walk.
