High on the plateau of the Central Ore Mountains lies one of the most striking bodies of water in the Czech Republic — the Přísečnice Reservoir. Its calm surface, framed by forests and rolling hills, offers a peaceful escape and a walk along its massive dam is an experience in itself.

Sitting at nearly 733 metres above sea level, the reservoir spans 362 hectares, with depths reaching almost 58 metres. In summer, the surrounding meadows and woods glow green against the blue water; in autumn, the plateau turns to gold and rust; in winter, snow and silence take over this exposed highland landscape. It's a place that rewards those looking for wide horizons and a sense of remoteness rarely found elsewhere in the region.

How to get there

• Přísečnice — cycling route no. 23 from Měděnec to Kalek, flat terrain, easy
• Alternatively, cycling route no. 3003 from Hora Svatého Šebestiána to Vejprty
• Blue-marked hiking trail crossing the dam crest, connecting Vejprty and Chomutov

Practical information

• Access to the waterline itself is prohibited, as the reservoir supplies drinking water to the region
• Best explored from the dam crest or the surrounding cycling routes

Beneath the reservoir's surface lies the site of the old mining town of Přísečnice, demolished in the 1970s to make way for the dam — a quiet reminder of how much changed here in just a few decades.
