Bärenstein (898 m a.s.l.) is one of the most rewarding summits in the Ore Mountains — a striking basalt table mountain topped with a viewing tower, a mountain inn, and sweeping views across the Saxon-Bohemian highlands. If you are looking for an accessible yet memorable day out in the Erzgebirge, this is it.

The mountain is a volcanic remnant, shaped by ancient lava flows, and it stands visibly above its neighbours Pöhlberg and Scheibenberg — all three are classic table mountains of the region. From the 30-metre observation tower next to the mountain inn, the view stretches south to Klínovec and Fichtelberg, north to the historic mining town of Annaberg, and west over the Cranzahl reservoir glittering below. A circular summit trail connects several fine viewpoints, making the walk around the top just as enjoyable as the ascent. In summer the beech forest offers welcome shade; in winter the slopes host a ski lift, a sledging run and cross-country ski trails.

The observation tower has a story of its own — the local Erzgebirgsverein branch lobbied for its construction as early as 1890, but permission was repeatedly refused. When the inn and tower finally opened on 30 November 1913, the celebration doubled as the club's 25th anniversary.
