Sulztalferner is one of the largest glaciers in the Stubai Alps, tucked away at the far end of the Sulztal valley. It's a spot for hikers who want to witness a genuine alpine glacier up close — while it's still there, since like many glaciers in the Alps, it is retreating fast.

The glacier lies north of the Windacher Daunkogel (3351 m) and east of the Wilde Leck (3361 m), framed by rugged ridgelines that give the whole area a raw, high-alpine character. Its accumulation basin is enclosed to the northwest by the Wütenkarspitzen and to the east by the ridge running from the Westlicher Daunkogel through the Daunscharte to the Daunjoch, with the Hintere Daunkopf rising further along. A small tributary, the Wilde-Leck-Ferner, flows in from the west off the south ridge of the Wilde Leck. Expect a stark landscape of rock, moraine, snow and ice, with a stillness that only high mountain terrain can offer. In summer and early autumn the visible retreat of the ice is a stark reminder of how quickly these landscapes are changing.

• Via the Sulztal valley — high-alpine terrain, demanding route requiring mountaineering experience and good fitness

• Between 1997 and 2006, the glacier lost 0.32 km² of surface area — the largest absolute loss among Austria's Stubai Alps glaciers

Interesting fact: Sulztalferner is one of only three glaciers in Tyrol where the green algae species Mesotaenium berggrenii has been recorded as cryoconite — an organism nearly invisible to the naked eye, though in sunlight it can cast a faint dark-violet tint.
