Schrankogel (3497 m) is the second-highest peak of the Stubai Alps, rising at the head of the Sulztal, a side valley of the Ötztal in Tyrol. Standing free from neighboring summits, it offers one of the most rewarding panoramas in the range without demanding technical climbing skills.

The northeastern side is defined by a steep firn flank dropping to the Schwarzenbergferner glacier, while all other sides show a rockier character. In summer the peak draws hikers eager for wide views across the Alps; in spring and early season the routes carry more snow and require mountaineering experience. On a clear day the view stretches to the Watzmann, Hochkönig, Dachstein, Großglockner, Großvenediger and even the Dolomites, with glimpses toward the Bernina and Ortler groups to the southwest.

How to reach the summit

• Amberger Hütte (2135 m) via Hohes Egg (2820 m) — marked trail, about 5 hours, easy to moderate difficulty (UIAA I), no glacier travel, monotonous but exposed only near the top
• Amberger Hütte via the eastern lateral moraine of the Schwarzenbergferner to the east ridge of Schrankogel — more varied route, partly exposed, over snow, ice or rock
• Franz-Senn-Hütte (2147 m) from the Stubaital, crossing the Alpeiner Ferner and Schwarzenbergferner glaciers to the east ridge — 5-6 hours, requires glacier experience and proper equipment

Good to know

• The approach from the Stubaital involves glacier crossings, so crampons, an ice axe and glacier experience are essential
• The Hohes Egg route avoids glacier terrain, making it more accessible for less experienced hikers
• The two routes from the Ötztal side can be combined into a loop tour

The botanist Hargasser reached almost to the summit as early as 1821, but the true first ascent is credited to the priest Schöpf around 1840.
