Osinalické bučiny is a small but captivating nature reserve tucked into the Kokořínsko landscape, where sandstone rock formations rise among beech woodland rich in rare orchids. It is the kind of quiet, off-the-beaten-path spot that rewards those who take the time to look closely.

The terrain is gently rolling, spreading across the lower slopes of the Skaliska hill. Through spring and summer the forest floor comes alive with protected orchid species, including the elder-flowered orchid, coralroot orchid and red helleborine. In autumn the beech canopy turns golden, while the sandstone outcrops add a touch of mystery to the woods. Old trees here shelter stock doves, so it is worth pausing quietly to listen and watch.

How to get there

• Nové Osinalice — green-marked trail toward Dubá, the reserve lies near the Osinalice saddle, easy walk
• Also reachable from the direction of Medonosy, about 1 km southwest of the reserve

Practical information

• Protected since 2002 due to the presence of rare orchid species
• Managed by the Nature and Landscape Protection Agency of the Czech Republic
• Stick to marked paths to avoid damaging the fragile orchid habitats
