Liptovská Mara is the largest reservoir in the Slovak Liptov region — a vast artificial lake framed by the peaks of the Tatras and Low Tatras, offering stunning scenery and a surprisingly rich offer for outdoor lovers. Whether you come for the water, the views, or simply the tranquil atmosphere, this place rarely disappoints.
In summer the lake buzzes with activity — sailors and windsurfers take advantage of steady breezes, while the sandy shore at Liptovský Trnovec draws swimmers and sunbathers. Autumn transforms the landscape into a palette of gold and amber, with morning mist rolling over the water surface. Winter is quiet and serene, making the reservoir an ideal base for those heading to nearby ski resorts. In spring, snowmelt fills the lake to its highest levels and the views of white-capped mountains are breathtaking.
How to get thereBeneath the calm surface lies a submerged chapter of history — between 1965 and 1975, twelve villages were flooded to create this reservoir, displacing over 4,000 people. Some of the rescued historic buildings can be visited today at the Liptov Village Museum in Pribylina.
