Žulový vrch (743 m) is a forested hill rising above Liberec, tucked between the districts of Ruprechtice, Starý Harcov and Rudolfov. It's a place where old quarries, hidden crosses and the ruins of a rock castle wait to be discovered under a canopy of mixed forest.

There's no panoramic view from the summit itself — dense spruce, pine, maple, larch and beech forest blocks the outlook — but that's part of the hill's rugged charm. Along the slopes you'll find granite outcrops, boulder fields and frost-shattered cliffs, plus small memorials scattered through the woods like the Miller's Cross, Holub's Cross and the Svojsík Mound. In summer the nearby Lesní koupaliště (forest swimming area) and trails buzz with visitors, while in winter the forest turns into a quiet retreat right on the edge of the city.

How to reach the summit

• From Lidové sady (Liberec tram terminus) — red-marked trail, via the Strážní buk junction and Ježíšek's Stones, to the Rudolfov – Česká chalupa junction, then an unmarked road to the top — about 4 km, moderate difficulty, 330 m elevation gain
• Shortcut: leave the red trail just past Ježíšek's Stones toward the Svojsík Mound, then follow an unmarked path for the final 250 m to the summit — about 3 km total

Practical information

• A radio spectrum monitoring mast (ČTÚ, since 2008) stands on the summit — no viewpoint
• The hill is included in the Nejhory Jizerek (Highest Peaks of the Jizera Mountains) challenge
• An active quarry (Ruprechtice) operates on the western slope — take care near the quarry area

The pink granodiorite quarried here — known as Liberec granite — has been used to decorate Prague metro stations, a fountain in Mariánské Lázně and even a monument to Jan Žižka near Borovany.
