Panüeler Kopf is the second-highest peak in the Rätikon range, straddling the border between Vorarlberg and Switzerland. Standing at 2859 m, it offers dramatic views and a wilder, quieter alternative to the more famous Schesaplana nearby.

The peak lies entirely within Austria and forms the western boundary of the Brandner Glacier. Its northern side drops away in a massive rock face down to the Nenzinger Himmel valley, a truly striking sight. From the summit, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views northeast towards Brand and north towards the Gamperdonatal valley. Whether under summer sun or dusted with early snow, the terrain here feels raw and remote, perfect for those seeking genuine alpine adventure.

How to reach the summit

• Mannheimer Hütte (2679 m) - blue-white marked route, about 1 hour, requires sure-footedness, a head for heights and some scrambling skill
• Nenzinger Himmel - via the legendary and spectacular Spusagang and Straußsteig, roughly 3.5 hours

Practical information

• The Mannheimer Hütte is the most common starting point for the ascent
• The route from Nenzinger Himmel is longer and more demanding, but exceptionally scenic
• A popular two-day circuit from Brand includes: Day 1 via Lünersee and Totalphütte to Schesaplana, descending to Mannheimer Hütte; Day 2 crossing Panüeler Kopf and descending via Leibersteig or Straußsteig to Oberzalimhütte and back to Brand

The Spusagang path is wrapped in local legend, making the approach to Panüeler Kopf one of the most memorable in the entire Rätikon range.
