Malý Borný is a small neovolcanic hill in northern Bohemia that punches well above its modest 372 metres when it comes to views. From the rocky outcrops on its slope you get panoramas that make the short, steep climb entirely worth it.

The hill sits between its taller neighbour Borný and the raised plateau of the Hradčany Hills, in the heart of the Dokesko region near Doksy. From the southwestern rock faces you can see nearby Borný, a slice of Lake Máchovo, the Jestřebí Basin and the Polomené Mountains, while the summit itself opens up views of both peaks of Bezděz. The area feels quiet and undeveloped, a nice contrast to the busy shores of Lake Máchovo below, and is at its best in spring and autumn when the air is clear.

• From the Doksy - Staré Splavy road or from campsites by Lake Máchovo - no marked trail, a steep climb up the slope, time depends on route chosen, difficulty: moderate to demanding

• There is no official path to the top - you need to pick your own way up the fairly steep slopes

It's a good pick for hikers who enjoy a bit of off-trail scrambling and views earned through their own effort rather than a paved path.
