Kleiner Rotstein rises to 3048 m along the border between East Tyrol (Austria) and South Tyrol (Italy), tucked into the rugged Rieserfernergruppe range. From the summit, views open toward neighboring three-thousanders — the Dreieckspitze to the northwest and the taller Großer Rotstein to the southeast. On the northeastern side lies the Fleischbachkees glacier, which stops short of reaching the summit itself. The South Tyrolean flanks of the mountain fall within the protected Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park, lending the area a wild, untouched character typical of the Eastern Alps' high country.
