Hochgall is the highest peak of the Rieserferner group, rising to 3436 m above sea level in the High Tauern, just 500 meters from the Austrian-Italian border. It's one of the most striking summits in South Tyrol, a bold pyramid of rock and ice that dominates the skyline above Antholz and Rein in Taufers.

The landscape here is classic high-alpine: glaciated slopes, sharp ridgelines and wide views stretching across the High Tauern range. In summer, approach trails cross alpine pastures and moraine fields before meeting glacier terrain; in winter and spring, the mountain becomes a serious ski-touring objective, its slopes wrapped in snow and ice. From the summit, the panorama takes in peaks on both sides of the Austrian-Italian border — a rewarding, wild corner of the Alps.

The first confirmed ascent of the main summit was in 1868, though an earlier 1854 survey expedition may have reached the top too — a climbing stick found decades later just below the summit hinted they got there first.
