The Wildgall rises as a striking pyramid above the Rieserferner Group, standing at 3,273 metres and ranking as the third highest peak in the range. Its sharp arêtes and imposing southern face make it one of the most recognizable — and challenging — summits in this corner of the High Tauern.

This is a mountain that commands respect. Widely regarded as the most difficult peak in the Rieserferner Group to climb, it was conquered relatively late in alpine history. The surrounding landscape, protected within the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park, offers dramatic high-alpine scenery of rock, glacier remnants and sweeping ridgelines, with views that stretch across the South Tyrolean Alps.

• Kasseler Hut (Rifugio Roma alla Vedrette di Ries), approaching from the north — about 4 hours, demanding route

Practical information

• The peak lies within the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park (Parco Naturale Vedrette di Ries-Aurina)
• Due to its difficulty, the summit is rarely attempted and best suited to experienced mountaineers

The first recorded ascent took place on 18 August 1872, when Victor Hecht of Prague reached the top with mountain guides Johann and Sepp Ausserhofer from Rein in Taufers — a fitting start for a peak that still tests climbers today.
