Dreieckspitze (3031 m) sits right on the Austrian-Italian border, straddling East and South Tyrol at the very point where the state border meets the boundary between the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park and Hohe Tauern National Park. It's the northernmost 3,000-metre peak of the Rieserferner group, making it a rewarding goal for anyone wanting a taste of true border-country wilderness.

The surrounding landscape is rugged and high-alpine, with the Fleischbachkees glacier lying just southeast of the summit and the Kofler lakes adding sparkle to the approach. Views stretch to neighbouring peaks Kleiner and Großer Rotstein along the connecting ridge. The terrain is mostly straightforward and unmarked with technical difficulty, making it accessible for confident hikers, while in winter and spring it also works well as a ski tour.

• The summit lies exactly on the Austrian-Italian border; the South Tyrolean approach is shorter and more popular
• An alternative route to Bärenluegscharte runs via the lower Knuttental and Sossenalm
• The peak is also suitable as a ski tour in winter conditions
