Großer Rotstein is a striking 3,147-metre peak in the Rieserfernergruppe, straddling the border between East Tyrol (Austria) and South Tyrol (Italy). It's a summit for those who crave real alpine terrain — glacier crossings, firn slopes and a rocky ridge finish.

The mountain's upper reaches sit in a remote high-alpine world of ice and rock. To the north lies the Fleischbachkees glacier, which doesn't quite reach the summit itself, while the southern flanks fall within the protected Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park in South Tyrol.
