Egyfás-sziget is a tiny sandbar island in the Szentendre branch of the Danube, tucked between Lupa Island and Szentendre Island, closer to the latter. It's a favorite rest stop for canoeists, kayakers and increasingly for SUP paddlers exploring the river from Budapest - and it can only be reached by water.

Despite its name suggesting 'one tree island', it actually holds two trees - a willow (Salix) and a white mulberry (Morus alba) - so intertwined and fused together that they look like a single tree from a distance. At low water levels, an extensive irregular gravel bar emerges around the island, multiplying its visible size several times over. During floods, the dry land disappears almost entirely, leaving only the treetops poking above the water. Aside from the two living trees, the island holds nothing but driftwood.

How to get there

• Accessible only by water - paddle in by kayak, canoe or SUP board from Budapest or nearby Danube landings.
• A popular stop along the stretch between Lupa Island and Szentendre Island.

Practical information

• Administratively part of Szigetmonostor.
• No land access exists - the island can only be reached by paddling.
• Water levels dramatically affect the island's visible size, so plan your stop accordingly.

This little island (together with part of neighboring Lupa) is said to appear in János Jankó's 1860 painting Riverside Landscape, whose reproduction featured on the old green 'Petőfi' ten-forint banknote.
