Nyerges-hegy is one of the notable summits in the eastern part of the Visegrád Hills in Hungary, its distinctive saddle-shaped ridge giving the mountain its name - 'nyereg' means saddle in Hungarian. It is a great pick for hikers wanting a quieter forest walk with rewarding viewpoints along the way.

Built from andesite, the volcanic rock typical of the whole Visegrád range, the mountain is actually formed by two connected ridges, one running south and one north. The landscape is classic mid-mountain terrain - dense deciduous forest, rocky outcrops and deep valleys, including that of the Sztaravoda stream. Summer brings shady, cool trails, autumn paints the woods in color, and winter can make the area feel wonderfully remote and quiet.

How to reach the summit

• Leányfalu - approach from the east, moderate difficulty depending on the chosen route
• Szentendre (Sztaravoda and Pismány districts) - alternative approach from the south, passing near Asztal-kő

Practical information

• On the way up look out for Sas-kövi-barlang, a small cave near Sas-kő thought to be artificial in origin
• The rocky summit of Asztal-kő (431 m) offers fine views over the Ókúti valley, the Bükkös stream valley and the distant Pomáz plain

Nearby residential areas and forestry work mean local wildlife tends to be shy, so a quiet approach may be rewarded with a rare sighting.
