Urak asztala is a modest 593-metre summit in the Visegrád Hills, straddling the border of Dunabogdány and Visegrád, carrying a surprisingly dramatic Cold War past. It's a hike where forest quiet meets the eerie remains of a former military base, rewarding visitors with both nature and history.

The peak sits within Duna-Ipoly National Park, surrounded by the dense woodland typical of the Visegrád Hills. The atmosphere here is unusual — abandoned military structures emerge between the trees, remnants of the days when this summit formed part of Budapest's air defense ring. In autumn and winter, when the leaves fall, the ruins become even more visible, adding a sense of discovery to the walk. In summer, thick greenery brings calm to the summit, while spring fills the forest with birdsong.

How to reach the summit

• Pilisszentlászló, hegytető bus stop (Volánbusz lines 870/871) — then a paved road via Pap-rét, about 6 km, roughly 250 m elevation gain, easy to moderate, also suitable by bike
• Approaching from Szentendre or Pilisszentlászló is considered the simplest option

Practical information

• Car access to the summit is restricted by forestry barriers — only walking or cycling is possible beyond them
• The entire route is marked with bicycle pictograms
• Some sections of the road are quite steep, worth considering if cycling
• The summit holds the ruins of a former anti-aircraft missile base — the site is partly derelict, so caution is advised

In the 1980s, plans even emerged to build a pumped-storage power plant on the summit as part of the controversial Gabčíkovo-Nagymaros dam project — but environmental protests put a stop to it.
