Tucked between the Danube and the Ipeľ river in northern Hungary, the Börzsöny is a volcanic mountain range that rewards every hiker with dense forests, sparkling streams, and sweeping panoramas — all without the crowds you'd find in more famous destinations. This is nature at its most unhurried.

The landscape here is wonderfully varied: rolling ridges blanketed in oak and beech forests, crisscrossed by roughly 470 crystal-clear streams — the longest being the Kemence. As you climb higher, the trees thin out and the views open up dramatically. From the highest peaks you can gaze upon one of Hungary's most iconic sights — the magnificent bend of the Danube. Much of the range falls within the Danube-Ipoly National Park, ensuring the wilderness stays wild.

• Csóványos (938 m) — the highest peak in Börzsöny, offering one of the finest panoramas in the entire country
• Magos-fa (916 m) — the second highest summit, a rewarding viewpoint accessible via well-marked trails
• Nagy-Hideg-hegy (864 m) — 'Great Cold Mountain', popular with families and day hikers
• Danube-Ipoly National Park — a protected haven home to 117 bird species and the spotted salamander

• Best season: April–June and September–October — spring brings fresh greenery, autumn blazes with colour

• Trail difficulty: easy to moderate — well-signed network suitable for families and beginners
• Getting there: by car from Budapest approx. 60–80 km; by train to Szob or Kismaros, then on foot

Fun fact: on spring evenings the whole range comes alive with birdsong — nightingales, thrushes and skylarks are among the 90 species that nest here every year.
