Nagy-Hideg-hegy is the third-highest peak of the Börzsöny mountains, rising to 864 meters. A remnant of an ancient stratovolcano, it lies within the Duna-Ipoly National Park and offers a rewarding mix of hiking and winter sports right in the heart of Hungary's northern highlands.

The steep, rugged summit rewards hikers with sweeping views across the forested Börzsöny range. In summer, the mountain is a peaceful retreat of dense woods and quiet ridgelines; in winter, it transforms into a lively ski destination, with historical accounts describing fierce winds and deep snowdrifts battering the ridge — so be prepared for changeable mountain weather.

• Királyrét — forestry and hiking route via Cseresznyefa parking (3.6 km) and Taxi-rét (9.6 km) to the summit (12.7 km total), demanding terrain, recommended for experienced hikers
• Kóspallag via Kisinóci mountain hut — blue-marked National Blue Trail (Országos Kéktúra), 6.9 km, a very steep section

• A renovated mountain hut with 40 beds operates year-round at the summit
• Ski buses run from Királyrét during winter
• The ski area, between 580 and 850 m, offers 5 lifts (4 operational) and 4.2 km of runs, weather-dependent and mainly running on weekends
• The large northern ski lift was damaged by a 2014 ice storm and awaits reconstruction

This peak was home to Hungary's very first ski lift, opened in 1953 after years of painstaking construction — a piece of history still visible in the landscape today.
