Dobogó-kő is the highest peak of the Visegrád Hills in Hungary and one of the most beloved excursion spots near Budapest. Since the late 19th century it has drawn hikers, skiers and cyclists with its sweeping views over the Danube Bend.

This volcanic summit rises to 700 m above sea level, right on the border between Komárom-Esztergom and Pest counties. The southern slopes climb gently, while the north drops away in steep rock walls and deep valleys leading down to the Danube, the most striking being the Rám ravine. On clear days you can even spot the distant Mátra range and the High Tatras from the top. Summers here are pleasantly cool, and winter snow lingers long enough to keep the local ski slope running.

How to reach the summit

• From Budapest via road 11, then the Pomáz–Pilisszentkereszt route — reachable by car or Volánbusz coach, also connecting from the Pomáz HÉV suburban railway station
• From Esztergom via Pilisszentlélek and the Kétbükkfa-nyereg saddle on road 11 115

Good to know

• A mountain hut operates in the stone building from 1906, while the original 1898 wooden lodge now houses the Tourism Museum
• The National Blue Trail (Országos Kéktúra) passes right through Dobogó-kő
• Several caves are found here, including the Szenteltvízmedencés Cave and the caves of the Szer-kövek rocks
• A small ski centre with two runs and a button lift operates in winter, along with a sledging track

Hungary's very first ski slope was built here in 1923, and today the area is equally popular with cyclists — Dobogó-kő has even hosted a mountain-top finish of the Tour de Hongrie.
