Alpkopf is a modest but rewarding peak in the Bregenzerwald Mountains, rising to 1788 m above the town of Dornbirn in Vorarlberg. It's the kind of summit that rewards hikers seeking a quieter alpine experience along a well-connected trail network.

The eastern side of the mountain is largely grass-covered, giving it a gentle, pastoral character, while the western flank drops away steeply, offering a wilder alpine feel. A simple wooden summit cross marks the top. Several streams originate below the summit on the western slope, feeding into the Bockshanggraben, a tributary of the Ebniterach. In summer, the surrounding alpine pastures are partly farmed, adding a rustic charm to the landscape, with views extending toward neighbouring peaks like Hoher Freschen and Salzbödenkopf.

How to reach the summit

• Via the trail connecting Dornbirner First to Alpkopf and onward to Hoher Freschen — demanding, requires sure-footedness, partial head for heights, and good hiking boots
• The European long-distance trail E4 (section Bregenz – Bödele – Hoher Freschen – Damüls) passes directly at the foot of Alpkopf

Practical information

• The nearest mountain hut is the Freschenhaus (1846 m)
• The route across Dornbirner First, Alpkopf and Hoher Freschen requires alpine equipment and sure-footedness
• The peak lies within the Hohe Kugel – Hoher Freschen – Mellental nature reserve

Though understated in appearance, Alpkopf makes a great link on a longer traverse between two of the region's better-known summits.
