Nejdek Castle is a modest but history-rich building standing right near the centre of the town of Nejdek, in the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory) foothills. It's a worthwhile stop for hikers who enjoy combining mountain trails with a bit of local heritage exploration.

Rather than dominating the landscape like a fortress, the castle blends into the townscape of Nejdek, framed by the gentle hills of the Ore Mountains. The atmosphere here is calm and unhurried - a pleasant pause point along a hiking route. In autumn and winter the building looks especially striking against the wooded hillsides, while summer invites longer walks through the surrounding countryside.

• The original Renaissance castle was built in the early 17th century by the Šlik family, replacing an older castle on the site
• It was rebuilt several times - after a major fire in 1857 it was restored in Neo-Baroque style with Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Gothic elements
• Today the building is privately owned (by the Woodrol company) and is not open as a classic tourist attraction

Interesting fact: over the decades the castle served many different purposes - from noble residence to a youth education institute, and later a computing centre for the local wool-combing mill.
