The Vajda Lajos Museum is a small but remarkable gem in the historic town of Szentendre, dedicated to one of the leading figures of Hungarian avant-garde painting. It's a perfect stop for travelers looking to combine a day of hiking with a cultural detour into a charming riverside town.

Housed in a burgher house dating from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the museum has an intimate, old-town atmosphere that suits its artistic collection perfectly. Inside are works by Lajos Vajda, master of the surrealist-constructive branch of the Szentendre school of painting, whose art fused local icon-painting traditions with the visual language of primitive cultures. The basement level hosts an additional exhibition on masters of the European School associated with Szentendre, including Anna Margit, Endre Bálint, and Jenő Barcsay.
