The Black Tower in Brașov is one of the most atmospheric medieval fortifications in Romania — a sturdy stone watchtower that earned its dramatic name after a lightning strike in 1559 scorched its walls pitch black, leaving them that colour for centuries. Perched on a rocky outcrop above the old town, it offers a wonderfully compact slice of medieval history with rewarding views over the city.

The tower sits on a crag of Dealul Romurilor hill, just a short walk from the city centre. The setting is lovely in every season — spring brings fresh green slopes contrasting with ancient stonework, summer offers cool shade and crisp views, while autumn colours the surrounding forests in gold and amber. In winter, the snow-dusted hills frame the tower beautifully. From its galleries you can take in a sweeping panorama over the rooftops of the old town and the mountain ridges beyond.
