Vf. Ciocanu (1,157 m a.s.l.) is a modest yet rewarding summit at the entrance to the village of Ciocanu — one of the highest permanently inhabited settlements in Romania. Sitting on the historic border between Muntenia and Transylvania, this hilltop offers a sweeping panorama that feels far grander than its elevation suggests.

From the southern side of the summit, the Bucegi Massif, Piatra Craiului and the Leaota Mountains line up in full glory. Lush green meadows contrast with the grey rock faces and snow-capped ridges beyond — a combination of colours that is genuinely striking. The area stays peaceful and uncrowded compared to nearby Bran, making it a quiet alternative for those who want the views without the tourist bustle. All four seasons have their charm here, but summer and autumn offer the clearest skies.

• From Dâmbovicioara via road DJ 730 — the summit is visible on the right-hand side of the road entering Ciocanu village; easy on-foot approach, no official trail marking required.
• From Ciocanu village — short walk across open pastures; difficulty: easy.

• The summit sits directly alongside road DJ 730, which connects Ciocanu (Muntenia) with Șirnea (Transylvania) — the route follows the old Austro-Hungarian/Romanian Kingdom border.
• Nine ecotourism trails (T1–T9) were inaugurated in the area in 2016 by the Mountain Ecology Centre, suitable for families with children.
• The nearest mountain hut is Cabana Brusturet, located approximately 1,828 m northwest of nearby Vf. Podurilor.

The name 'Ciocanu' literally means 'hammer' or 'peak' in local dialect, and villagers still say 'I'm going to the top of Ciocanul' — an expression unchanged since at least the 15th century. The area also saw the very first Romanian military casualties of World War I in August 1916.
