Szentendrei-barlang is a small, artificially formed cave in the Visegrád Hills, within the Duna-Ipoly National Park, on the outskirts of the town of Szentendre. Despite being called a 'cave', it is actually the remnant of a medieval quarry, tucked into a rocky ridge running down from the Asztal-kő peak.

The site has a raw, rocky character - andesite walls, a narrow entrance, and an interior measuring roughly 3x5 meters, now partly filled with fallen rock blocks that make it feel more cave-like than the open rock shelter it originally was. Nearby lies a similar formation known as Macska-lyuk (Cat Hole). The surrounding area is quiet, forested, and especially appealing outside the summer months when the rock faces are easier to spot through thinner foliage.

How to get there

• Szentendre (town center) - hike up the ridge north of the Sztelin stream toward Asztal-kő, moderate difficulty
• Alternatively via the nearby Macska-lyuk cave, located a short distance away

Practical information

• The interior measures approximately 3x5 m (some sources cite up to 3.1x5.7 m and 7 m in height)
• The cave is of artificial origin, likely created during medieval stone quarrying
• The surrounding rock is andesite tuff and andesite breccia
• Bones found inside suggest the cave serves as a shelter for small predatory animals

In older literature, the site is also referred to as Nyergeshegyi üreg. It is one of seven cave-like artificial hollows in the Visegrád Hills, making it an interesting stop for those drawn to unusual, historically layered corners of the mountains.
