Šumburk is a romantic ruin of a Gothic castle standing alone atop a hill near Klášterec nad Ohří. This is a place for those seeking quiet, history and views rather than crowds — the ruins still carry the atmosphere of medieval feuds and dark intrigue.

The hill, rising to around 540 metres above sea level, was chosen deliberately — at a time when firearms were changing the nature of warfare, an isolated summit offered natural protection. Today the site is covered in forest, with fragments of walls, remains of the residential tower and gate remnants emerging among the trees. In autumn and spring, when the foliage thins, views open up over the surrounding Ore Mountains. The atmosphere here is calm and slightly mysterious — perfect for a walk away from the crowds.

Legend has it that one of the castle's owners, Aleš of Šumburk, tricked and captured his rival Vend of Illburk, imprisoning him in the tower where he starved him to death — a dark tale still told in the surrounding villages.
