Catherine's Gate is one of the most captivating medieval monuments in Brasov — a Renaissance-era city gate tower that has stood since 1559 and still impresses with its elegant architecture and turbulent history. Once the only passage between the walled city and the Șchei district, it is today the sole surviving tower of what was once a vast fortification complex. Step through its ancient archway and feel centuries of history all around you.

The tower sits at the foot of Mount Tampa, just a short stroll from Brasov's main square, surrounded by a charming small dendrological park featuring plane trees, chestnuts, thujas and forsythias. It is a wonderfully atmospheric spot in every season — blossoming in spring, shaded and cool in summer, golden in autumn, and quietly dramatic in winter. Look up at the four corner turrets crowning the tower: their presence was a legal symbol that the city held the right to pronounce capital sentences, known as 'Jus Gladii'.

Above the gateway arch, a Latin inscription from 1559 still reads: 'Turris fortissima nomen Domini' — 'The name of the Lord is a strong tower.' The gate was built at the initiative of mayor Johannes Benkner and served as the city's sole southwestern entrance for nearly three centuries.
