Likava Castle is the largest castle ruin in the Liptov region of Slovakia — a striking silhouette of crumbling towers and walls perched on a rocky hill above the Váh valley. It has been watching over travellers and trade routes for centuries, and today it rewards visitors with sweeping views and a genuine sense of history. The castle sits within the cadastral area of the village of Likavka, just a short distance from Ružomberok. Its hilltop position gives wonderful panoramas over the surrounding Liptov landscape and the mountain ridges beyond. Spring and autumn are particularly atmospheric — the ruins glow against fresh greenery or fiery foliage — but the castle has a raw, almost haunting beauty in winter too.

First mentioned in records in 1315, Likava passed through many hands over the centuries — Hussite garrisons, János Hunyadi, the Zápolya family, and eventually the Rákóczi rebels, who demolished it in 1707 during their retreat. That turbulent end is what makes it such a compelling place to visit today.
