Perched on a rocky hilltop on the Czech side of the Ore Mountains, Hasištejn Castle ruin is one of the most evocative medieval sites in northwest Bohemia. With a tower you can climb for sweeping views, a beautifully preserved Gothic chapel, and centuries of turbulent history, it rewards even a short visit.

The castle sits on an oval ridge above the steep valley of the Prunéřov stream, surrounded by the forests of the Ore Mountains. The remaining walls of the Gothic palace, the chapel with its cross-vaulted ceiling, and the commanding cylindrical tower give the site a genuine medieval atmosphere. In spring the hillside blooms with fresh greenery, summer brings welcome shade among the ancient stones, and autumn turns the surrounding forests into a sea of gold — each season offers its own mood. Don't miss the extensive cellars beneath the courtyard, carved into the hillside rock.

• From the village of Místo — yellow trail, approx. 1 km, easy
• From the Ušák roadside restaurant on road I/13 — blue trail, easy

• The castle is open to the public during visiting hours — check the current schedule before your trip
• The main tower has been converted into a viewing platform, accessible via an oak spiral staircase
• A small inn on site (rebuilt in 1995) is handy for refreshments
• The late-Gothic outer bastion in front of the castle is freely accessible year-round

At the turn of the 16th century Hasištejn was a flourishing centre of Bohemian humanism, home to one of the largest private libraries in the Czech Kingdom — and in 1810 Johann Wolfgang Goethe himself paid a visit, commemorated by a plaque on the inn building.
