On the southwestern slope of Nagy-Kevély in the Pilis Mountains stands a curious relic of Hungarian cinema history - a wooden replica of Eger Castle, built purely as a film set. Walking among its weathered ramparts feels like stepping straight into a 1960s historical epic.

The atmosphere here is quietly melancholic: an abandoned movie set slowly being reclaimed by nature, surrounded by forested hills and open valley views between the villages of Pilisborosjenő and Csobánka. The setting is particularly atmospheric in autumn mist or fresh spring greenery, and it lies close to the distinctive Teve Rock and the Országos Kéktúra (National Blue Trail), making it an easy addition to a longer hike.

How to get there

• From Pilisborosjenő — connects to the National Blue Trail, approx. 1-1.5 hours, easy to moderate difficulty
• From Csobánka — alternative approach through the valley between the two villages

Practical information

• Unsupervised site, free access, caution advised due to the deteriorating wooden structure
• In 2008, for the 40th anniversary of filming, the Pilisborosjenő local council restored the surroundings and installed a memorial plaque

The castle was built in the 1960s for the film 'Egri csillagok' (Stars of Eger), and during filming of the large-scale battle scenes part of the wooden structure burned down and was immediately rebuilt. It later served as a location for many other Hungarian films and even for the TV series 'The Witcher'.
