The Mauritius Mine is a former tin mine near Abertamy that operated almost continuously from the 16th century until the 1940s. Today part of its underground galleries is open to visitors, making it one of the most fascinating mining heritage sites in the Ore Mountains.

The site carries a distinctive atmosphere - the rugged Krušné hory landscape, dotted with old spoil heaps and adit entrances, feels frozen in time. In summer, the surrounding meadows and forests invite longer hikes, while in winter the area around Hřebečná and Boží Dar turns into a quiet, snow-covered landscape perfect for peaceful walks. Inside the Kryštof adit, visitors experience the cool, mysterious underground world with visible traces of hand-hewn rock and fire-setting mining methods.

Practical information

• The mine is generally open to the public from May 1 to October 15
• The Kryštof adit is 272 metres long and leads to a chamber 65 metres long and up to 25 metres high
• The site was listed as a national cultural monument in 2014

Over the centuries thousands of tonnes of tin were extracted here, and in exceptional cases the ore contained up to 20 percent tin - making Mauritius one of the richest mines in the region.
