Perched on a hill directly above the old town of Brașov, the Cetățuia de pe Strajă is one of Transylvania's most captivating fortresses. Built specifically to prevent enemies from bombarding the city from the surrounding heights, this citadel has witnessed more than five centuries of wars, sieges, epidemics and political upheaval. A visit here is like stepping straight into Central European history.

The citadel stands on Dealul Straja (Sentinel Hill), between the old districts of Brașovechi and Blumăna, to the north of Brașov's historic centre. From its walls you get a wonderful panoramic view over the red rooftops of the old town with the Postăvaru massif rising behind them. The hill itself is a pleasant green escape throughout the year — lively with birdsong in spring, shady and cool in summer, and strikingly atmospheric when dusted with winter snow.

• Brașov city centre (Piața Sfatului) — on foot through the Brașovechi neighbourhood to the foot of the hill, then up the path to the top; approx. 20–30 minutes, easy.
• From the Blumăna district — an alternative path leads up the green hillside; similar time and difficulty.

• The citadel is a nationally protected monument (LMI code BV-II-a-A-11393).
• Since 2015 the interior has been closed to visitors due to a legal ownership dispute; in November 2022 Romania's highest court ruled the site state property, and Brașov city hall is pursuing its transfer for public use and restoration.
• The exterior walls and the surrounding hill paths remain accessible and offer excellent views.

During the 1848 Revolution a few hundred insurgents held out here for two days against the Russian army — while curious Brașov citizens watched the spectacle from the city promenade below, until a cannonball sent them scurrying back behind the town walls.
